Levels

Four levels of editing, applied honestly

Developmental editing

Big-picture: structure, argument, pacing, character arcs, chapter flow. Best when the manuscript still has structural questions to resolve.

Line editing

Sentence-level rewriting for clarity, rhythm, and voice. Best when the structure is solid but the prose needs to shine.

Copyediting

Grammar, syntax, consistency, style sheet, fact spot-checks. Best after content is final but before formatting.

Proofreading

Final-pass error catching after layout. Best as the last step before publishing.

Sample

Before / after — a real editing pass

Two short excerpts showing the kind of changes a line edit makes. Shared with author permission.

Before

"She walked into the room and she looked around the room and saw that there was nobody there in the room at all, which made her feel a feeling of being very alone in that moment."

After

"She stepped into the room. Empty. The silence pressed in until even her own breath felt like an intrusion."

Before

"The main and most important thing that leaders need to do in order to be successful is that they have to listen, in a real way, to the people who work for them on their team."

After

"The single most important thing a leader can do is listen — really listen — to their team."
